MY PROFESSION

I am a healthcare administrator and presently a partner and the CEO of MedServ Management Services in Platte City, Missouri.  MedServ manages air medical programs in conjunction and cooperation with host hospitals across the United States.  Currently I am serving as the CEO of Airlift Northwest which is a large consortium air medical provider in Washington and Alaska sponsored by the University of Washington , Harborview, and Children's Hospitals.  Immediately prior to my current position with MedServ, which I started on May 3, 2004, I served as the Associate Operating Officer of Emergency Services at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.  Through that position I oversaw the Emergency Services Division of the hospital which included the emergency department, trauma services, Life Flight critical care transport programs, disaster planning, Bed Control / Transfer Center, and Patient Access Services.  I started at Duke in September 1998.

Previous to Duke I was the president and CEO of West Michigan Air Care, a critical care helicopter and MICU provider based in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Air Care is the result of the merger of the helicopter programs of Borgess Medical Center and Bronson Methodist Hospital in March 1993.  It was the first air medical merger in the United States and were the featured cover story in the July/August 1995 issue of AirMed now called the Air Medical Journal.  Before Air Care I served as the Assistant Administrator for Emergency, Trauma and Ambulatory Services at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, which is outside of Washington, DC. Fairfax is part of Inova Health System.  As part of my responsibilities, I researched and implemented an air medical service called Inova Medical AirCare.  I left Fairfax in September 1992 to merge the services in Kalamazoo and to lead West Michigan Air Care.

I am currently a member of the Association of Air Medical Services Board of Directors and serve on the Executive Committee as Immediate Past President.  I am a past president and former webmaster of the Triangle Healthcare Executives' Forum, a past president of the Michigan Association of Air Medical Services, past director of Region IX (Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia) and Region III Director (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan & Ohio) for the Association of Air Medical Services.  I also served as a regent and instructor for the Medical Transport Leadership Institute (MTLI) from its founding in 1997 through 2007.  MTLI is held annually at the Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in Wheeling, West Virginia.   I am currently the Treasurer of the South Carolina Area Association of Air Medical Services.

I am a Fellow (FACHE) in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with the American Society of Association Executives, and a Certified Medical Transport Executive (CMTE) with the Association of Air Medical Services.

SPORTS & RECREATION

I enjoy cross county ski racing, biking, roller skiing, yoga, and club workouts.  I have skied 28 cross country ski marathons, including the American Birkebeiner, North American VASA and the White Pine Stamped.  This year was my 21th American Birkebeiner which continues my official membership in the Birchleggings Club.  The Birkie, has it is called, is the largest cross county ski race in North America with over 9,000 skiers.  The race is a point-to-point race from Cable to Hayward, Wisconsin and I have been participating in the event since 1985.  I had my personal best time for the course in 2004!  The VASA is held in Traverse City, Michigan and the White Pine in Mancelona, Michigan.  Tim Burke, Mike Tarnow and I have developed a web page of our experiences at the American Birkebeiner.  It can be accessed by clicking on the cross county race picture below.

From 1995 through 1998, I served as the captain of the Kalamazoo YMCA Men's 3.5 Team.   We competed against other clubs in central and southwest Michigan and ended both the Summer 1996 and 1998 seasons as the Western Michigan District Division II Champions.  My specialty was doubles and I playing competitively from 1985 through 1998.  In 1997, I won the 10 Annual Irish Open Men's 3.5 Doubles Championship with a partner from the West Hills Tennis Club.  The Irish Open is a large regional doubles tournament held in Kalamazoo around St. Patrick's Day.

I bike and roller ski to stay in shape for cross county skiing.   Running has been part of my life since graduate school but, unfortunately, I tore my medial meniscus in road race in June 2006 in Kansas City and had to give it up not wanting to risk further injury after arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear.  Kansas is a great place for biking as it wide open roads and has miles of bicycle trails that are wonderful for a nice leisurely ride or power training. I joined the Johnston County Bike Club in 2006 and lead the Quivira Park Ride on various routes every Saturday morning.  I have completed three century rides in 2006, 2007, and 2008 riding to southwest of Lawrence, Kansas and back in the Lone Star Century which is also a Johnson County Bike Club sponsored event.  Roller skiing helps me keep a good skate motion for cross county skiing and is also a real blast!  Yoga is a great relaxation and flexibility routine.

INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES

I was a member of the Portage, Michigan Rotary Club.  As part of my Rotary activities I have worked with an alternative high school for disadvantaged kids.  I have found that bringing them over to Air Care was a great motivator in helping them look at possible future career opportunities.

From 1993 through 1998 I was affiliated with the Kalamazoo County Alliance Against Drinking & Driving (KCAADD).  For four of those years I served as the organization's president.   KCAADD is a consortium organization of many different agencies and organizations in Kalamazoo County.  Their work centers around reducing the incidence of drinking and driving.  Do you know that 50% of the accidents on our highways have alcohol as a contributing factor?

The Southwest Michigan Quality Council, which is sponsored by the Kalamazoo County Chamber of Commerce, began efforts to provide quality improvement resources for all sectors of our regional economy.  I was a member of the council from 1992 through 1998 and served as chairperson my last year.

From 1975 through 1977 I served as a VISTA Volunteer.  The first year was spend in southwest Iowa assisting older Americans with health education programs. My second year was with a citizens group in the inner city of Detroit where I investigated conditions in nursing homes.  The VISTA experience gave me direction to my choice of healthcare administration as my career path.

I am a member of the Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church which is a spiritual community located in Shawnee Mission that is striving to make the world a better place.  I like the Unitarian Universalist approach because we believe that personal experience, conscience and reason should be the final authorities in religion, and that in the end religious authority lies not in a book or person or institution, but in ourselves. Unitarian Universalism is a "non-creedal" religion and we do not ask anyone to ascribe to a specific doctrine which thus allows for a great diversity of thought and discussion in our membership.

EDUCATION

I did my undergraduate work at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.   I was a general studies major with concentrations in history, psychology and Asian studies receiving a bachelors of science degree in 1974.  After working in the sporting goods industry and serving as a VISTA volunteer for two years, I went back to school in healthcare administration at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan.   As part of my program, I spent a summer in the People's Republic of China where I studied their healthcare system.  I received my masters in health services administration in 1980.  I graduated from Grosse Pointe North High School in Grosse Pointe, Michigan in 1970.  I am a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and have worked with a number of chapters in Michigan and North Carolina as an alumnus.  I have also been a faculty member of the national leadership school in Evanston, Illinois.

CONSULTING SERVICES

I have done consulting in the areas of trauma systems development and air medical services.  I have served as an administrative trauma systems reviewer for the State of Virginia and the Trauma Systems Foundation in Pennsylvania.  In the air medical field, I have provided assistance in the development of air medical programs and now the consolidation of existing providers.  If you are interested in speaking with me, please E-mail me at ereroe@eroe.com.  Click for my vCard address and telephone information.  Add me to your address book with Plaxo!  Click on link.
